Getting Employees Interested in Safety Awareness!

Getting Employees Interested in Safety Awareness!

As we all know, safety in all professions matters. Construction safety is crucial!

We are proud of our safety record and our safety program.

Our safety program seems simple in terms of how it is implemented.

Every morning we conduct a short “gather around time” before anyone heads out for the day. Our AGM goes over safety equipment needed for the day, along with reinforcing previously discussed safety topics pertaining to the projects of the day. This could be anything from hard hat inspections to previously viewed videos on safety.

A Safety Award system was put into place about three years ago by our Safety Director. To be eligible for our safety award, you must not have been in violation of any of our stringent safety rules during the past month. Every name of eligible Glaziers/Technicians (usually everyone) is then put into our bright orange container and one is drawn by our Office Manager. The winner receives an award! Usually the award is a fun package of food. For the 4th of July our award was a “grill package” which included packages of meat for the grill, corn on the cob, watermelon, star spangled cookies and American Flag napkins and plates. The winner this month was a veteran of the United States Army who served in Kentucky and South Korea!

Last fall our award was issued to all technicians. Glazing is hard work, so we decided our Glaziers needed a little R&R time to let their bodies and minds relax while reviewing safety procedures. The company sent each Glazier on a weekend get-away. They were given a choice of a few places within driving distance from St. Louis, with the optional in town get-away. Choices ranged from a spa weekend to Branson, MO. All costs and planning were arranged by our Safety Director.

A regular full safety meeting is also conducted every month, led by our Safety Director, our AGM or one of our Glaziers.

The feedback from our Glaziers has been positive, with all saying they enjoy the meetings and the awards.

The key to safety meetings is having researched what your topic is to be and asking your Glaziers what they would like to discuss, and rewarding safety!

Research.
Listen.
Share information.
Enforce.
Reward.
Pretty simple.

Have a safe and happy July 4th!
